volume and panning isn’t mixing
From reading a Sound on Sound home recording book (that you can pick up from isoHunt) I’ve found out a lot about equalisation that has helped me understand what I’m supposed to be doing (page 66 onwards).
By layering the instruments and giving them their own frequency ranges to live in it’ll stop the mix from sounding muddy. Each instrument causes wanted and unwanted frequencies, and with a little experience, or a Sound on Sound home recording book, you’ll know which ones should be boosted or cut.
I tried recording a little acoustic guitar earlier and the results were less than desirable. It’ll probably be a combination of old, dull strings, the cheap DACs on my onboard sound card and the microphone placement. Obviously, I’ve got my work cut out for me. I’d post a small excerpt of how it sounded if Jack was still working after a recent upgrade. Just another entry to the bottomless list of complications.
Due to this setback, I thought I’d record a video of a very short song called ‘Don’t Cry For Me, I’m Already Dead‘ instead. The song is named after a sarcastic comment by my friend Paul. To be honest I didn’t realise that my face makes such over the top gestures when I sing.. Ouch.
